JILL'S VMAS RED CARPET RECAP

The MTV VMAs is just like Twitter for celebrities - you find out who they truly are. The dress code sits somewhere between strip club attire and a formal affair, giving celebrities a ton of room for interpretation. And for us in the audience, that makes it way too much.

Best

Hailee Steinfeld: Although she's pretty young, Hailee is pulling off this sophisticated look without trying too hard to be mature. I also like the toned down makeup mixed with the statement piece necklace. I do wish the hem of the pants were a tad bit longer.

Laura Marano in Victoria Beckham: I really have no idea who this is, but I do know this dress looks great on her. She is also absolutely stunning and her makeup and hair complete the look. Bringing a little class to this $H!+ show (#respect).

Miley Cyrus: Before you close the window out and completely discredit me, let's remember what the VMAs are all about (Lil' Kim's mermaid outfit, anyone?!). As crazy as Miley may look, I appreciate her having fun and not disappointing us. 

Worst

Kylie Jenner: Things aren't going well for you on the carpet when you're standing next to your sister who is in her 30s and you look like her mom.

Jeannie Mai: "Let's add some stars to it. And then throw birds on it... yes, birds! And why not a number 25 just because?!" This is the conversation I imagine happened when designing this dress.

Justin Beiber's hair: If a "cool mom" from the suburbs's hair had a baby with Donald Trump's hair, this is what they would produce.

JILL'S GRAMMYS RED CARPET RECAP

I always say this when it comes to the Grammys... it's such a weird event to dress for. Do you go for the evening gown look? Do you work a casual outfit?! Do you wear challah bread on your head like Iggy Azalea did?! (The answer to that last question is no). Last night's fashions were interesting, and while I've noticed that sheer paneling is still a thing, I thought there were a variety of frocks that walked down the carpet. So let's chat about them! 

Here are my favorites, not-so favorites, and others worth commenting on.

Best

Gwen Stefani in Versace: I love a woman in a pantsuit. Gwen Stefani in a pantsuit? Pure magic. This is the perfect balance of doing things outside of the box, while not looking you're a two-year-old dressing themselves. 

Nicki Minaj in Tom Ford: This is how you show a little skin, while still keeping it classy. Nicki's body looks amazing and I love the bottom detail of this dress.

Haim in Stella McCartney: First, I love seeing these girls walk the runway because I've had their album on repeat for days. But they don't just kill the stage, they're killing the red carpet (individually) while still looking cohesive. (via JustJared).

Worst

Charli XCX in Moschino: I appreciate the fashion risk, but she looks like a caterer wearing the fur of an animal she's about to serve. 

Kat Graham in Yanina: There is a white flower taking over her body and nobody is doing anything to help her poor soul out.

Zendaya in Vivienne Westwood THAT PIXIE CUT: Because that's all I could focus on when looking at her. Does she not look AH-mazing in her new hair?

Kim Kardashian in Jean Paul Gaultier: I can kinda see what Kim was going for here, but what is up with the extra-long sleeves? Is she trying to pretend like she's North dressing up in her mom's clothes? I do love the beaded detail of the gown though, and her new short hair.

JILL'S GOLDEN GLOBES RED CARPET RECAP

I've always called the Golden Globes the pre-game to the Oscars, and as I start my day on a fashion/makeup/mani cam (ugh) hangover, I realize these words run true. So let's recap what we witnessed last night together! And if you were drinking as much as Giuliana Rancic was drinking last night, and you have a real hangover from George Clooney's tequila (side note: how awkward was that?!), I hope this hydrates your Monday. Here are my favorites and not-so favorites!

Emma Stone in Lanvin: Jumpsuit. Glitz. A BOW. Who can say no?

Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Carolina Herrera: This dress is one big yellow dream... in the best way possible. The fabric looks luxurious and I love the top. It pairs well with her dark, wavy hair and ear party - that's a thing, right?

Lupita Nyong'o in Giambattista Vali Couture: I liked this risk, and really loved this color on Lupita.

Zosia Mamet in Andrew Gn: The top of this dress looks like it belongs to a completely different outfit. I was also pretty shocked at her choice of pink. Good news is I think she's finally starting to be able to pull off the blonde hair.

Laura Prepon in Christian Siriano: I feel like I should insert some Orange is The New Black joke, but I am too distracted by those terrible swirls on her dress. I'm always an advocate for gowns that aren't strapless, but the black mixed with the long-sleeves (and weird pattern) is looking matronly. Her makeup and hair look beautiful, but not enough to keep her out of jessandjill.com fashion jail (there it is!).

Keira Knightley in Chanel: Chanel CAN do wrong. It took 30 people to pick insects and sew them on to this dress. She looks like a walking museum exhibit.

Tina Fey: This should read, "Tina Fey in a really expensive dress that she disrespectfully allowed her daughters to bedazzle".

What Could Have Been

Rosamund Pike in Vera Wang: Spoiler alert - Gone Girl is actually about a British woman who gets rid of all of her baby weight in five weeks. Seriously, her body looks stunning, but the fit of the top of this gown is doing nothing for her. She should have just walked the red carpet naked, Rihanna style.

Amal Clooney: Let me just say that I love the fact that she wore gloves, however I just wish they were a different color. White has the tendency to look tacky. But if anyone can pull this look off, it's Amal. I want to be her when I grow up.

JILL'S PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS RED CARPET REVIEW

Last night was the 2015 People's Choice Awards, AKA another chance for me to criticize, drool over, and talk about celebrity red carpet looks. The People's Choice Awards are one of those shows that nobody knows how to dress for, so you always see a mix of casual, Oscar-wannabe, and downright weird frocks. Which of course, makes for a ton of fun to talk about.

Here are my favorites and not-so favorites!

Best

Ariel Winter in Smythe: Give me all of the menswear inspired looks! This is how you mature gracefully in Hollywood without twerking on Robin Thicke (although I do love me some Miley). I'm already taking Ariel much more seriously as an actor after this look, and I've never seen her act.

Ellen Pompeo in Elie Saab: Glad to see that jumpsuits are here to stay in 2015. I love the slimming outline of this outfit around the waist area, and the sheer arm details. It's also tailored to perfection and the color looks great on her skin.

Kristen Bell in Monique Lhuillier: How adorable does Kristen look in this pink number? While the outfit does somewhat drown her tiny frame, I just love the structure and how she paired it with fresh makeup and wavy hair. Maybe post-pregnancy glow is a real thing.

Worst

Anna Faris in Juan Carlos Obando: This outfit is looking a little ruff-led (get it?). Anna would have been better off pairing that top with tailored pants, or just ditching the whole look. There are many other ways to show off that killer body. Besides, the ruffles are hiding that insanely toned stomach!

Kat Dennings: Hopefully those sleeves were built to fly that dress far, far away. I almost never go against anything that's black and lace, especially paired with a red lip, but there's too much going on here. This dress would look ten times better shorter, without all of that extra fabric at the bottom. The look on her face says it all. 

Molly Tarlov: I try to keep each post to a one bad joke maximum, but this is nothing short of Awkward. This blue number is doing nothing for her shape, and completely hides her natural waist, making her look stumpy.

JILL'S AMAS RED CARPET RECAP

From Oscar-worthy gowns to short little dresses (and even painted on shirts - WTF?!), Last night's AMAs had a variety of fashions. You never know what is going to show up on these celebrities, and while there usually isn't any garment to go Taylor-Swift-Blank-Space insane over, there were some worth discussing. Here are my favorites and not-so favorites!

Best

Kendall Jenner in Yigal Azrouel: Kendall > Kardashians. That is all.

Kate Beckinsale in Kaufman Franco: Usually Giuliana Rancic's red carpet freak-outs make me roll my eyes hard, but this time, I totally get it. Kate looks amazing in this white gown, proving white after Labor Day is always acceptable (especially with that body).

Selena Gomez in Giorgio Armani Prive: 90% of the reason she was one of my favorites was the plunging back-line. Also loved her red earrings, pulled back hair, and arm parties.

Worst

Zendaya in Georgine: She missed the train wreck that was the Aaliyah Lifetime movie, but looks like she couldn't dodge this one. She is drowning in all of that fabric. Someone save her.

Heidi Klum in Versace: This outfit will hit a Wet Seal store near you in 3... 2...

Mary Lambert: Funny thing is, I think she looks good and I don't mind the dress. But if you aren't going to take the time to steam your clothes before you step out on a red carpet, you deserve to be on the worst dressed list. I have strong feelings on this.

JILL'S EMMYS 2014 RED CARPET RECAP

I'm seeing red. And not because I'm completely pissed off at this rainy weather (which I am), but after watching many red frocks walk down the 66th Annual Emmys red carpet. I did trade in a night of sushi with Jess and Soraya for the red carpet coverage, so I didn't get to catch many of these gowns in motion, but for some of these (cough Lena cough) that might be a good thing.

Here are my favorites and not-so favorites.

Best Dressed

Claire Danes in Givenchy: If you're going to do red on the red carpet, you better do it (you know what I mean?) The cut out detail, with lace overlay, and detailed neckline take this red dress to the next level. I also love that her hair is soft, paired with her bold lip. 

Sarah Paulson in Armani Prive: Am I supposed to like this? I don't think so, but I find it so darling. Plus it adds an interesting twist to a black strapless dress. It's volume without being too overwhelming, and the slick, straight hair keeps the look from being too cutesy. 

Camila Alves in Zuhair Murad: Having Mathew on your arm can always help your amplify your look, but Camila didn't need any help last night. Mixing a peek-a-boo pattern with long sleeves and a conservative neckline keeps things balanced. I also thought the pattern was soft and delicate against her skin. 

Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier: Sure, it's black and white, but doesn't she look like a classic beauty? Regina George, eat your words.

January Jones in Prabal Gurung: If this was on anyone else, I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much. January's messy bangs and shoes add an edge to this frock, and I really like the texture of the gown. Again, if you're going to do red... make it interesting.

Worst Dressed

Lena Dunham in Giambattista Valli: Every news outlet should apologize for publishing the designer of this gown, because I imagine they don't want to claim this. And her hair stylist should enroll in the witness protection program and start over. I'm kidding, it's not that bad. Okay maybe it is.

She's not really trying, right?

Betsey Brandt in Alice + Olivia: This is a great example of how the wrong styling can negatively affect a dress. I actually like the print of this dress, but hate it paired with the black clutch and black, closed-toed heels. I am not one to think that someone is too old to wear something, but Betsey's hair is styled too maturely for such a bright dress. I also think the hemline should either be longer or a little shorter, since this length makes her stature look short. 

Taissa Farmiga in Honor: Is this a lace skirt on top of a short dress? I don't get it.

Laura Prepon in Gustavo Cadile: There is a green monster eating Laura. Talk about the dress wearing the girl.

Amanda Peet in Giambattista Valli: I would have totally loved this dress in a time in my life where I also loved butterfly clips and glitter eyeshadow.

MTV VMAS RED CARPET LOOKS

I think Wet Seal sponsored the clothing for this year's VMAs.

I don't watch the MTV Video Music Awards for the fashion. I more watch it for the outlandish events (cue the "Imma let you finish"), the nostalgic memories of the VMAs when I really enjoyed them (thanks Katy Perry for the Britney and Justin denim reminder), and the gif-worthy reactions from celebs (speaking of, where was Rihanna and her b!+ch face?). Dressing for the VMAs probably isn't the easiest, since you have to find that balance between "fun and hip" and "don't look like a complete idiot because you're still at an awards show". So I'm not surprised that nobody walked the red carpet and wowed me.

Still, I've managed to pick a few favorites that I enjoyed, and of course, a few that I had to comment on.

Best Dressed

Jourdan Dunn in Balmain: Looking like the epitome of a super model.

Kim Kardashian in Balmain: The cut is a little deep, but I'm obsessed with this print.

Kendall Jenner: Technically she's a Jenner, and also a model, so I don't feel half as bad as I should that two members of this family are on my favorite list.

Chanel Iman in Balmain: Loving this feels wrong, but I don't wanna be right.

Worst Dressed

Amber Rose in Laurel DeWitt: I get the desire to show off your flat stomach, especially after having a baby, but really? Maybe it's my nostalgia for 1998 (see here), or maybe it's the fact that I don't get why she covered up her tattoos that makes me not like this look. Or maybe it's because she's literally wearing chains and underwear.

Solange Knowles: Solange took her sister's "I woke up like this" a little too literal. Is that pajamas?

Taylor Swift in Mary Katrantzou: Is she learning the alphabet? Also, E! was drunk when they tweeted this.

Katy Perry in Versace: I don't really have to spell this one out for you, right?
